Millie and Lou is the preschool adventure YouTube Original show following young Millie and her best friend Lou. They share the magical forest with exciting creatures who are all based on global folklore stories.
With a focus on friendship and acceptance, the show draws from creators Mandy Wong and Rory Cooke’s different childhood experiences.
Deep in the forest lives Millie, a friendly and fearless young girl, with her best friend Lou, a clever yet cautious little cat.
Millie and Lou share the forest with various creatures, the ‘Forest Folk'. Millie can’t wait to befriend them, whilst Lou is a little more apprehensive.
This enchanting, pre-school twist on a “Monster of the Week” series delights in the magic of making friends and finding common ground, no matter who you are or where you come from.
Creating the app
What's better than watching the show? Exploring for yourself!
We wanted to capture the excitement of the show, as Millie and Lou meet the fantastical Forest Folkies. We pieced together clips of the show to make up a whole map of the Forest and recreated this as a 2D environment for the game.
Then we set about designing an experience which would allow children to explore the Forest, meet the Forest Folkies and engage in fun activities.
To achieve this, forest exploration was combined with a colouring game—children met each Forest Folkie and then coloured them in Lou's Big Book of Forest Folk, helping to meet and get to know these friendly characters.
